A herniated disc in back appears when the annulus fibrosus or outer fibrous ring of a lumbar intervertebral disc is ripped by several problems prompting the nucleus pulposus or the soft central portion of the disc to bulge out. Even in the absence of nerve root compression, the discharge of inflammatory chemical mediators called tumor-necrosis factor alpha (TNF) can cause intense pain. If left neglected, the disc could herniate and the nucleus pulposus leak out, which could lead to a pinched nerve and also trigger back pain.
Lumbar disc herniations normally occur in the lower back, specifically between the 4th lumbar vertebrae all the way down to the sacrum (L4 to L5 and to S1).
A “Slipped Disc”? Often wrongly called slipped disc, a herniated disc cannot slip since it is affixed and squeezed between two vertebrae. The intervertebral disc, however, could be compressed, stretched and twisted out of its placement in small degrees or stages.
The stages are outlined below:
Reports have presented that bulging discs are more typical than herniated discs. However, herniated discs can cause serious discomfort. For some people, pain may not be included even with a bulging or herniated disc in back.

Have you ever had to endure — even for just a few moments — an annoying and often nagging pain along the side of your leg?
Then you may be suffering from sciatica which results from the sciatic nerve fibers being compressed. These nerve fibers run from the lower back in the lumbar region and through the sciatic foramen, behind the thigh and down your legs towards your feet.
The pain from sciatica can be varied: dull or sharp, tingling or burning, numb or accompanied by sporadic shocks of pain from the lumbar area going down the back of the thigh towards the feet. Any movement affecting the lower back such as sitting or even standing up can be painful.
Some people have found inversion table therapy to offer some lower back pain relief.
Inversion tables are specially designed tables that permit the patient to hang upside down or at an angle in an effort to alleviate back pain. Sometimes, gravity boots are used in conjunction with the inversion table. In a way, inversion therapy is similar to spinal traction or spinal decompression therapy.
Although traditional western doctors are sometimes reluctant to recommend inversion tables or inversion therapy for back pain, there are claims that it can be effective. The reasoning or principle behind the treatment is simple. Much of the back problems people have are the result of aging – in other words – living a long time with gravity constantly pulling down.
The idea behind inversion tables is that your weight is turned upside down (or at least angled) and by having your weight suspended from your lower body you are putting equal and opposite gravity pressure on the joints and spine. Therefore, in effect, you are doing the opposite of what happens naturally — the constant “weighing down” on the body by the pull of gravity when you are standing upright. This is intended to reverse or reduce the pressure on the discs between the vertebrae and help reduce the wearing down, or degeneration, of those discs.
Another type of spinal therapy device that is gaining popularity is the DRX9000. This machine is a kind of sophisticated traction table that employs a computer-controlled oscillating pull-and-release motion to relieve stress on the spine. According to the manufacturer Axiom Worldwide of Florida, this special oscillation motion prevents the body from going into spasm which is what can happen with traditional constant-force type systems like traction tables and inversion therapy systems.
Always consult with your doctor or medical professional to understand fully your healthcare options and associated risks.

where can i get amazing back pain remedy?
for stenosis back pain
Reflexology works fantastically for back bain. Even just applying acupressure to the relevant part of the foot works brilliantly.
My father was hit by a semi-trailer (and survived!), and had excruciating back pain afterwards (as you can imagine). He is a GP himself, and the only thing he found that helped his back was reflexology. He swears by it, and has recommended it to his patients ever since.
To self-treat, my father recommends getting something like a golf ball (something that is hard that you are able to manuever around your feet). Then, roll your foot over it until you find a really tender spot (for the back, this will be somewhere on your instep). Once you have found that tender spot, press down on it (on the golf ball) for about 20 mins.

If you’re still in pain after traditional open back surgery, what are your options? No one wants another open surgery with a 3-5 month recovery time. A minimally invasive procedure like endoscopic spine surgery might be the answer.
The fact is Failed Back Syndrome (FBS) or Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) accounts for the majority of patients that we see at Spinal Centers of America. FBS is simply the diagnosis used when a patient does not experience the expected results from back surgery. FBS does not mean your surgeon did anything wrong. The surgeon’s techniques may have been flawless, but for whatever reason the patient continues to experience chronic back pain – sometimes greater than before the procedure.
Endoscopic spine surgery has proven to be very successful in cases of FBS because the surgeon can use a “virgin” route avoiding areas scarred from previous surgeries. Endoscopic spine surgery can remove scar tissue from previous surgeries, decompress nerves, remove bony growths that cause pain, repair bulging herniated discs and bulging discs and provide relief for a wide variety of spinal conditions without further damaging muscle tissues or ligaments. In general, endoscopic spine surgery proves to be a much better alternative than pain management treatments that often require strong narcotics or spinal cord stimulator implants.
The endoscopic incision is very small, usually less than an inch, and can be covered by a Band-Aid afterward. Rather than cutting muscles and pulling them with retractors, surgeons trained in endoscopic procedures manipulate tools through a thin endoscopic tube that contains a camera that enables them to navigate to the correct area and perform the procedure. The endoscope minimizes the area that is disturbed to enable the procedure to be done under twilight anesthetic and minimize recovery time.
Patients suffering from Failed Back Syndrome are the biggest proponents of endoscopic spine surgery because they have been through traditional open surgery; spent months recovering; and still suffered from significant back pain. At Spine Centers of America, procedures are performed by board certified orthopedic spine surgeons who have years of training and experience in endoscopic spine surgery, so our success rate is very high. After the procedure, which usually takes an hour or two, patients can expect to walk out of the facility on their own within a few hours with significant or complete relief from pain. Some patients return to work as quickly as three days, while most patients are “back to life” and resume normal activities (or even more active lifestyles) within a week or two.

Leg Pain 8 days after microdiscectomy?
My girlfriend had an L4-L5 microdiscectomy about 9 days ago. Just yesterday she mentioned that she was scared because she was having leg pain sort of like before the surgery. Is this normal? I’m really scared that she may have reherniated, but I cant think of anything she could have done to do so.
She has her post op in a few days. Does anyone have any words of comfort in the meantime? Is this at all normal in the healing process of the Sciatic nerve?
Here is a post surgery picture:

What's the worst that could happen if the surgery for a bulging disc herniation?
My mother had friends such as surgery, and she I had to do months of physical therapy because something happened to her spine during surgery … what happened and how it is?
To be 100% honest, any invasive procedure has its risks, especially surgery. Complications may occur during and after surgery, some more serious than others. The two worst case scenarios end? You can die or be paralyzed. Routine operations, such as to repair the disks, complications are very rare. Before of this procedure, the physician must pass on the risks, the procedure, the need for postoperative etc and asked to sign a "consent" which, as its name suggests, indicating that they are aware of the risks and give consent for the doctor performing the surgery. In the case of the mother of his friend, could have been a number of things, but without more information, might assume that due to the location of the operation, complications related to the spine and spinal cord followed. It is not uncommon for a doctor to prescribe a form of physical therapy after surgery, regardless of the success it was. My mother had the same procedure to repair a bulging disc two years ago and the operation was completely successful with no complications. After three months of physical therapy, she returned to normal, perhaps even better than it was before the disk problem. I also a friend who had the procedure after experiencing some type of injury at work. He also was a success and has returned to his gym rat lifestyle before without any problems. Discuss your concerns with your doctor. He / She must be more than happy to go with you. Good luck!
