What does non-surgical treatment of a herniated disc?
My husband has a herniated disc in lower back (L5 I think.) It was in the pain for about 6 months. Physical therapy did not help. There were two of the three regular injections of steroids and worsened after the third. It is currently resting in bed. Take Flexaril, Hydrocodine, tramadol and antiflammitory (I forget which). It seems fair to keep getting worse.
Without seeing clinically, it is difficult and dangerous to give specific treatment advice. What is so delicate is the term "slipped disc". Radiologists and other physicians often use this term at random. In the true sense of a herniated disc differs from that of a "lump" or "growth" in which a hernia, the ring wall (Outer layer of the disc), remains intact, but he is incompetent. This means that the team moved on the disk can not be restored to a standard position. The clinical presentation is usually that the pain (and possibly numbness and tingling) generally spreads to your feet, and is constant. A bit of relief that may occur in the prone position or specific exercises, but the second, the patient returns to the return of symptoms. In the ring incompetent recovery, therapy physical … if manual therapy, traction, specific exercise direction, or "stabilization" exercises is a moot point. Many of these patients will improve with time as the record companies, or may need surgery. The fact you say it was worse after injection is worrying. Was conducted under the direction flouroscopic? Otherwise, I saw a bunch of people if worse after the injection in a doctor. Typcially, these patients after injection, have increased leg pain, which may have been intermittent, but now is worse than the constant back pain. If this is the case, extruded is a piece of … probably due to the injection entered the disk instead of the epidural space and then broke the record. Can not do much If these other surgery or time. However, in cases where the disc is just the projection or convex, they often respond to physical treatment. However, me I would have expected much better performance at this point … should have taken place within days to weeks, months. The next thing to discuss is that the quality of physical therapy varies considerably among practitioners. After spending hundreds of hours of education permanent residence in the care of the spine, the best advice I can give, unlike specific exercises is to have her husband followed with a physical therapist who is certified at least, but preferably a diplomat in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. If you have not received the care of such a PT, I recommend it as an easy and simple it may have been totally abandoned. Or, if it appears to be a ring or incompetent fragrant extruded, it becomes very evident during the evaluation, and will transmit this information to you. I was involved in a car accident some time ago. The incident was other driver's fault and there was a witness. Herniated Disc: New or From Previous Condition? What You Should Know
What's the worst that could happen if the surgery for a bulging disc herniation?
My mother had friends such as surgery, and she I had to do months of physical therapy because something happened to her spine during surgery … what happened and how it is?
To be 100% honest, any invasive procedure has its risks, especially surgery. Complications may occur during and after surgery, some more serious than others. The two worst case scenarios end? You can die or be paralyzed. Routine operations, such as to repair the disks, complications are very rare. Before of this procedure, the physician must pass on the risks, the procedure, the need for postoperative etc and asked to sign a "consent" which, as its name suggests, indicating that they are aware of the risks and give consent for the doctor performing the surgery. In the case of the mother of his friend, could have been a number of things, but without more information, might assume that due to the location of the operation, complications related to the spine and spinal cord followed. It is not uncommon for a doctor to prescribe a form of physical therapy after surgery, regardless of the success it was. My mother had the same procedure to repair a bulging disc two years ago and the operation was completely successful with no complications. After three months of physical therapy, she returned to normal, perhaps even better than it was before the disk problem. I also a friend who had the procedure after experiencing some type of injury at work. He also was a success and has returned to his gym rat lifestyle before without any problems. Discuss your concerns with your doctor. He / She must be more than happy to go with you. Good luck!

After sustaining a herniated disc in the lower back, how long does it take for pain to radiate down the leg?
I have 2 herniated discs in my back (L5/S1, L4). I’ve been injured w/o specific treatment for the discs for a year. It took 3 1/2 months for pain to go from my back to my leg (w/glute and hip pain developing steadily during that time). I’ve been decently, but not overly, active. Does it usually take that long?
Any leg pain needs elevating on a sofa. For back pain the best solution is to do situps every other day to build back strength.
The best way to get out of pain fast (body aches) is to sleep in a sleeping bag at night to circulate body heat flow. U will wake up with no pain. It really works , try it.

Herniated Disc: At Home Indicators of Disc Herniation
Most disc injuries occur in the neck and lower back and occur in the mid back occur much less often. Disc injuries often cause pain radiating into an extremity. The herniated disc of the neck (cervical spine) pinch nerves that radiate pain into the arms often into the hands and to the upper mid back. Injured discs of the lower back (lumbar spine) cause pain in the lower back and radiate into the leg often to the toes. Herniated disc in the lower back often cause leg pain without any lower back pain. Ninety percent of the time when you have radiating leg pain below the knee it is related to a compressed disc of the lumbar spine.
Three at home lower back tests you can do to indicate if a herniated disc is causing your pain are:
Slump Test – Sit on a chair. Then slump your shoulder forward and let your lower back curve toward the back. Then raise one or both of your legs straight out in front of you. If you have radiating pain in the leg you probably have a lower back herniated disc.
Leg Raise Test – Lay on the floor flat of your back. Keep both legs straight and raise both heels off the floor about 6 inches. If you have radiating pain into a leg or legs or you are unable to hold your legs up you probably have a lower back herniated disc.
Leg Traction Test – While lying flat on your back have someone pull slowly and but firmly on your leg from the ankle and foot. If your lower back or leg pain lessens you probably have a herniated disc and traction would be a good treatment.
Two tests to help you understand if you have a herniated disc in the neck are:
Upper Limb Nerve Tension Test – While sitting raise your upper arm until it is horizontal to the floor and your forearm pointed straight up toward the ceiling. Then tilt your wrist back. While your wrist is tilted backwards extend your arm straight and then push your straighten arm backwards. If this test causes pain radiating into your extended arm then you probably have a herniated disc in your neck.
Cervical Traction Test – While sitting, place your hands over your ears, then gently lift up on your head, and apply traction to the neck. If your pain diminishes spinal decompression would probably be a good treatment intervention.
Diagnostic imaging is necessary to be absolutely positive you have a disc protrusion. MRI of the neck or lower back is best because it not only gives detail of the bone but also the soft tissues of nerve and disc with no x-ray exposure. CT scan also allows you to see a disc protrusion. CT scans are also best for detail of bone and not so good for soft tissue. CT scans are usually less expensive and use x-ray to produce the image. In my opinion MRI is clearly the first and overall best choice to image a herniated disc.

what are the causes of MS I have had pain in my back ,hips, legs, thighs ,feet, where I can’t move. The doctors here in buffalo ny. can not figure it out.
Sometimes it takes alot of tests, like an MRI , that will show up as bright spots either in the brain, or the spinal cord, or both. Like mine did.
The defining test is a spinal tap. Thats when I knew for sure what was wrong with me. They had to send the spinal fluid to New Jersey for the tests to be done.
I was told everything from “you’ve had a stroke” to”you have Lupus” Find yourself a good neurologist, but first ask the question,”How much do you know about M.S.?” He or she won’t be offended by your asking. Yes there is pain, weakness & fatigue, & its very frustrating. Just stay where it is cool, because M.S. patients do not fare very well in the heat!
God bless & good luck

I have what appears to be a bulging, or herniated disc in my neck, definitely caused from my job. I have two doctors that agree with me. I have a claim in with wcib in ontario, has anyone experienced success or failure? I’lm getting an MRI tomorrow to confirm this problem, and I am still waiting for a ruling. I have not been able to work for 3 months, and hope to get all my sick time reimbursed. I’m going to therapy every day for this, and have had some relief, but not complete at all. Any info would be helpful!!
I would suggest the Wellsley Health Cent re, now part of St. Michales hospital. There are very many professionals there of very many disciplines. May be a good place to get an opinion. It is inner city. Also a great teaching venue for doctors and upcoming doctors for the U of T.

Terrible neck and arm pain could this be a cervical herniated disc?
I am in acute pain with a terrily blocked neck and very painful arms: in spite of physio over the last month and treatment with nsaids the pain is getting worse. I have an inverted cervical spinal section that has compensated for serious lumber problems-I had past surgery for lumber herniated discs. The pain is really bad I am booked in for mri scan and orthopaedic examination but in meantime could do with advice as I just dont know what to do.I have an 11 month old baby and looking after her is becoming atrociously painful. Any help would be gratefully recieved. Thank you so much
I would try to bump up the MRI and visit with your spine surgeon if needed. Sometimes asking for a Medrol steroid dose pack can be beneficial, but not if you’re breast feeding. It sounds like you have a serious spinal disease, may have stenosis or herniated disc pusing on the cervical nerves or spinal cord – I would NOT do anymore PT. Do NOT see a chiropractor before seeing your spine surgeon, especially if you have problems with the cervical spine. Chiropractic adjustments can be good things, but not if you have major problems – they can sometimes do more harm than good if you have bony disease.
Keep on the NSAIDs if able, 600-800mg ibuprofen 3x day, rest and don’t do anything that hurts. I know it’s hard with a little one. There’s always the ER too if really bad.

I’ve been having pain in my lower back and right hip for a while, and finally went to a chiropractor. They ran a bunch of tests and decided that i have a bunch of pinched nerves in my back. They suggested therapy to help adjust my back and train my muscles so that this problem won’t come back (at least not too soon).
After all of this, my parents decided that They don’t believe the treatment that the chiropractor recommended. They said it’s all a bunch of “hokey”. So I canceled the appointments. As much as I’d like to, I just can’t afford the treatment on my own, and my parents won’t support it.
At this point, I’m just hoping someone has some idea of how I can relieve the stress in my lower back. It’s been bothering me for most of the day. It’s mostly a dull pain, but as it gets worse as the day goes, it becomes sharp, stabbing pains as I stand and move and walk around. Any suggestions?
