severe back pain herniated disc
Herniated disc problem?

I have a herniated disc in lower back with a sharp pain in my right leg. I am currently in physical therapy, but also for the last few days, back and leg was more painful than usual. My back began to spasm and my foot was numb stay long (my doctor). I do not know what to do. It's the weekend and I can not call my doctor until Monday. I've tried almost everything. I wonder if this is normal and if you have any advice? It would be much appreciated … thanks!

it is a new treatment using a type of traction that allows discs to rehydrate and relieve pressure on the spinal cord.

Cause Low Back Pain Disc

08/04/2011

cause low back pain disc
Back pain. What could cause it?

For the past month, month and a half, I’ve been have lower back pain every day. I will get these sharp stabbing pains. Sometimes if my shirt lightly touches my lower back, I get this bad sore pain. It sometimes travels up my back, into my neck and gives me headaches. Sometimes when I bend over to pick something up my lower back cracks feels a better then when I straighten up again, here comes the pain only a lot worse.

I have 8% scoliosis in the lower mid section of my spine, but that wouldn’t cause my lower back to hurt as bad as it does every day.

I know my back pain can be the result of anything.
Slouching
Cracking it too much when I was younger
Arthritis
Degenerative disc disease

Anything.

Does anyon have an input to why I may have this much severe back pain all the time?

if you use a computer more than an hour a day, the ergonomics of your workstation could be doing it.

your bed mattress might not be supportive enough.

If you are male, you could be sitting on a fat wallet, which really causes back and leg problems – really.

and there is always the possibility that a very painful b ack is a symptom of angina.

you need a doc to sort this out. as soon as the doc’s office opens.

Hi, I'm scheduled for an MRI scan of what appears to be a herniated disc in the upper back (neck). My question is:

I jaw surgery and I'm sure I have metal …. and when he was 18 years (now 46) who had a lobe of my left lung removed (common pneumothorax) and not so sure he did not use a kind of staples at the moment … . If fear of making the MRI …

Should have used an implant-grade titanium, which is right in the RM. Your technician will ask metals in your body and you will be able to decide what is best. Sure they know.

Chronic Back Pain Therapy

07/02/2011

chronic back pain therapy
Does anyone have an answer to chronic back pain?

My husband has a herniated disc. We tried pain medications, injections cortisone and chiropractic. None of them worked. The pain lasted 3 months and do not know what else to do. Yes Please, if you've tried something and it worked, let me know!

What about Physical Therapy? TENS unit? Massage therapy? ESI (epidural steroid injection)? Nerve blocks? How many different types of pain medication the doctor treated? In just three months, I can not imagine that all options for pain medications have been tried. A doctor prescribed anti-inflammatory? Long-acting narcotic analgesics? Short-acting narcotic pain relievers? Anticonvulsants or antidepressants? (We are working to relieve nerve pain related) muscle relaxants? What about combinations of drugs? Many patients with chronic pain take a combination of long-acting, short acting muscle relaxant, nerve pain and anti-inflammatory drugs. Types of drugs in the combination depends on type of pain and the source of pain, but I never met a patient with chronic pain takes a single drug. If your doctor has tried drugs narcotic analgesics – Not the doctor to try different medications? Several drugs (long years of short-acting) that have different basic drugs in them. Medications essential are morphine, oxycodone, oxymorphone, hydromorphone, hydrocodone, fentanyl and methadone. Most of these essential medicines are in short form and a form of action scting long, and many patients with chronic pain have to try several different drugs that act at different doses before finding one that works well for them – and I usually try different short-acting medications to see which of these work best for them. What types of specialists (doctors) do not see your husband? It met with a pain specialist again? A doctor of pain can offer different treatments, and because they specialize in pain management are the best provider for go to any and all types of chronic pain. Three months is a long time when you are in pain, but little time considering the number of treatments and medications that are available to try – 3 months, is not nearly enough time to try many things. So three months is not much time to see if the things you've ever tried (the injections and chiropractic) still worked. It can sometimes take several cortisone injections before the pain allows sustainable (so that the injections are often performed in a series). You can also take several weeks (sometimes up to 6 months) before the full effect of chiropractic treatment of pain will be felt. I know it is very difficult be in pain and little (if any) help, but often requires much trial and error (and time) to find the exact treatment that will provide each patient with the relief Adequate pain. I suggest going to a pain specialist, trying different drugs in different combinations and give other treatments to treat (and given time to work effectively). Good luck!

Herniated Disc Decompression

06/21/2011

herniated disc decompression
Anyone out there with herniated discs?

Hey everyone my name is Brian. I am 24 years old and have 2 herniated disc L4 L5/S1. All this started about 2 years ago I was golfing and I must have torn something. Long story short it has gotten better and it has gotten worse but I am afraid will have permanent damage. Anyways I have been doing PT and Decompression for the last 6 months straight. The pain will not come out of my left foot but my back is almost no pain at all. I will be seeing a neuro surgion in a few weeks but I was hoping someone out there has a similar story and can give me some good excercizes to do.

Welcome. And yes. In December I had surgery to remove a fragment of the l5/s1 that had broken off and settled on mmy sciatic nerve. The number one thing to be doing it strengthening your core. Planks, Chop/Lifts and activation drills. Your PT should have shown you some of this. But mostly you need to be walking. Daily. I still do. Check out my training log, in my sig. Go back to early December and you will see my progression post op.I also never had back pain. All pain and tingling down my right leg and foot. My right foot actually went to sleep for a month. That was when we did surgery.

Lower Back Pain Disc

06/09/2011

lower back pain disc
I have lower back pain. Is it a herniated disc?

I’ve had this weird pain in my lower back an inch or two above my left butt cheek for a couple months now. I don’t remember doing anything that would’ve caused it but it really hurts. One time I was walking down the stairs and when I took the last step to the ground, a huge sharp stabbing pain made me yell in pain and I had to crouch for a few seconds before it subsided. That was the worst it hurt. Last night I felt the pain when I tried to bend down to pick up my shoes. Also If I stand perfectly straight and tilt my torso to the side I feel the pain there. I don’t know much about back pain and wonder if someone can tell me what it might be?
I’m 19 and I currently do Judo martial arts but this started way before I starting doing it. When I wake up in the morning it feels much better with almost no pain

Hi, and I’m sorry that you are in pain. Barring any type trauma to your body, muscle imbalances are the second leading cause of back pain.

Chances are, you have never heard of muscle imbalances and worse you don’t even know that your own muscles are out of balance. My answer will be sort of long, as I want to go into detail and it’s important to understand what is happening in your body. But the reality is that everyone has muscle imbalances to some degree – regardless of age, sex, or level of fitness. No one is perfect. And even if you did manage to achieve perfection, you could not stay there for long.

In simple terms, a muscle imbalance occurs when you have overdeveloped and tight muscles in one area of your body while the opposing muscles are weak and stretched out of their normal position. These imbalances can happen anywhere on the body and often develop as the result of the routine things you do while on the job, playing sports, or engaging in other activities you enjoy.

As your muscles get more and more out of balance, you end up pulling your self out of proper alignment thus producing uneven more stress and causing additional wear and tear on muscles, ligaments, joints, and even the spine.

Almost all of us live our lives with chronic unrecognized muscular imbalances and while it does take time for muscle imbalances to cause a symptomatic condition the first signs of trouble are evident on our bodies in the form of “postural dysfunctions”. Postural dysfunction can be seen in the abnormal position on the pelvis, head, neck, shoulder and even in the curvature of the spine.

Once a postural dysfunction has developed, your body cannot go on for long this way before you will begin to experience problems. That is why you should never just cover up the pain or put off addressing your condition. In other words, if you are in your 40s, don’t wait until you’re 60′s to decide you have a problem.

Try this analogy: If you drive your car with the wheels out of alignment, the tread on your tires is going to wear unevenly. If you don’t get an alignment, eventually you’re going to have a blowout. The same principle holds true for your back and other areas of your body.

So in order to address muscle imbalances, self assessments are done, in order to figure out which stretches will get your body back into proper alignment.

To learn more, you can go to :http://www.losethebackpain.com/treatments/musclebalancetherapy.html

There are also tons of free videos to watch which demonstrate some simple stretches you can perform in the meantime.

Herniated Disc Decompression Therapy

herniated disc decompression therapy
Herniated Disc – help needed.?

What non-surgical techniques have been more effective? I'm thinking about the McKenzie method, accupunture, inversion therapy, spinal decompression, swimming, walking, Exercise Ball, physiotherapy, chiropractic, core strengthening exercises. Also, what plans, Drug others and what are the best books on the subject?

My husband went through the entire range of the epidural (Temporary Relief) medications, physical therapy, and even that is when nuecleoplsty zap away inside the disk for free of pressure. The only thing that helped most exercise was. He started riding a bike with upright handlebars and is now 70% better. He is off all pain medication and with the exception of any golf course, bowling, or lifting heavy objects, fine.
