FMLA and state disability?

Hello! I am trying to get some info for my mom. She works for a non profit organization in Ca, and was recently on disability for some shoulder pain. She was diagnosed with frozen shoulder and she has a tear in the muscle tissue. She went through some minor therapy during her 12 weeks off, but it didn’t seem to work.
Her employer advised her that if she did not return to work after her 12 weeks of FMLA was up, they could not guarantee her position once she returned. When her 12 weeks were up, although she was still in lots of pain, she went back to work in fear that she will loose her job.
Since she’s been back, she now has low back pain and her shoulder pain is getting worse.
Is there a way for her to go back on disability and keep her position and benefits?

No, I don’t think so.

FMLA is there to protect the employees, but the 12-week limit is there to protect the employer.

If she can’t be there enough to do the job, then her employer really needs to get someone else to do the job. I know it’s not ideal for your mom, but it’s only fair to the company.

Could constipation cause this?

forgot to write – I only drink water, no sodas, coffee, tea, anything. Only water.

Constipation or even kidney infection!
Try taking some gentle constipation relief and see if that resolves it, if no better after about 24 hours go to see you GP who can run some tests to find out exactly what it could be!!
My Dad gets these pains and its put down to his kidneys as he doesn’t drink as much as he should! But only your doctor can find this out!

P.S Not enough fluids can also cause constipation!

Does cervical pain during sex, lighter periods and near chronic lower back pain mean endometriosis?

For starters, I am 26 yrs old, have 3 children, in good health-although overweight, am on the birth control pill, and in a great relationship, but I have a sexual issue as of late.
Whenever my husband and I have sex, I end up having sharp pains in my cervix with every thrust. Over the past few months my period has been getting lighter and lighter; only spotted for 3-4 days last time. I have lower back pain practically every day when I get out of bed and quite often at night when I am crawling into bed. I have taken several pregnancy tests and all have came up with negative results.
I need some help and answers here and it seems my research has been circling around endomteriosis. I was hoping someone out there had some idea of what may be happening to me.

I had the same symptoms and had endometriosis. i had a C-section with my child though. It was very painful. Your OB can do a laproscopic procedure that can fix you right up if thats the case. I don’t have pain anymore!

Vitamin D for Pain Relief?

The D vitamin was discovered in 1919, it is often known as the sun vitamin because a form of the vitamin is produced when the sun warms our skin.

Along with calcium, it has long been linked to bone health and the prevention of bone diseases like rickets and osteoporosis, but researchers now believe the sun vitamin may have other health benefits as well.

Having too little vitamin D has been linked to chronic pain conditions such as arthritis. In some chronic pain cases, doctors will diagnose the patient with low D levels using a standard test and administer vitamin supplements.

Often, this seemed to ease the patient’s pain.

Vitamin D deficiency which can lead to osteopenia, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, fractures, common cancers, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases, has been found to be lacking particularly in inhabitants of colder climates.

*A recent study, for example, indicated that the median adult intake of vitamin D in the US is only 230 IU per day, versus the researchers’ recommended 2000 IU per day.

Dutch researchers have also linked vitamin D deficiency to depression in older adults.

The researchers still had many unanswered questions, but noted that low levels of vitamin D lead to overproduction of a parathyroid hormone, which has been linked to signs of depression. The researchers are planning further tests to determine whether the low D levels are a cause or the affect of the depression.

In a separate study, a Canadian research team led by Dr. Pamela Goodwin studied the vitamin D levels in breast cancer patients.

The team found patients with sufficient levels of vitamin D were less likely to die of breast cancer or have the cancer spread.

This may be because vitamin D works in the body to block the growth of abnormal cells and also hinders the type of blood vessels that feed tumours.

With almost 50,000 deaths in the U.S. each year from breast cancer alone, these findings could have a huge impact on American health.

Weatherford’s Dr. Nusrat (Ness) Khan, M.D. FAAP, added previous research suggests calcium and vitamin D could connect to receptors on some tumours causing the tumour cells to slow down production, and in some cases will cause the cells to die (a process called apoptosis).

Kahn also cited a 2006 study which found appropriate levels of calcium and vitamin D decreased polyps in the colon, and another study which indicated appropriate levels of calcium decreased the risks of breast cancer in pre-menopausal women.

“An appropriate amount of calcium and vitamin D — about 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium, and 400 International Units (IUs) of vitamin D — does have a protective effect on osteoporosis and maybe on pre-menopausal breast cancer and colon cancer,” Khan summarised.

“But just because some is good, more is not necessarily better,” he said.

Since there is no evidence showing increasing vitamin D through sun exposure outweighs the risks of developing skin cancer, using a vitamin D supplement is the safest way to be sure you’re getting the required daily amount.

The key to maintaining healthy amounts of calcium and vitamin D lies in following recommended amounts and in consulting a physician for individual needs.

Khan also emphasised how people receive their vitamins and minerals is very important.

“We must emphasise natural sources,” he said. “From a nutritional standpoint, we should rely first and foremost on our diet, and secondly on vitamin supplements.”

For calcium and vitamin D, Khan recommends dairy products like milk and yoghurt. Seafood is also a good source of D.

Khan recommends using vitamin supplements to make up for what diet doesn’t provide.

Vitamin D inadequacy can be easily and inexpensively treated using a prescription supplement, once or twice a week for four to six weeks, according to Hooten.

Deficiency in vitamin D affects inhabitants of colder climates, because sunlight induces synthesis of vitamin D in humans. As such, if a consumer is not getting adequate exposure to the sun for vitamin D and its subsequent impact on their serum 25 (OH) D levels, they should be supplementing with vitamin D.

Vitamin D refers to two biologically inactive precursors – D3, also known as cholecalciferol, and D2, also known as ergocalciferol. The former, produced in the skin on exposure to UVB radiation (290 to 320 nm), is said to be more bioactive. The latter is derived from plants and only enters the body via the diet.

My own view is that the implications are that in chronic pain patients, vitamin D inadequacy is not the principal cause of pain and muscle weakness, however, it could be a contributing but unrecognised factor.”

Anyone beginning to take supplements should also check with their GP to make sure the vitamins won’t interfere with any other medications.

You should check the labels to make sure the pills do not provide more than the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D.

I started a low carb diet for weight reasons and I’ve been on it for about 5 days but I’ve been having bad lower back pain recently. could it be related?

The Truth About Chronic Back Pain

The treatment of lower back pain is one of the most frustrating challenges a doctor can undertake. It is a specialty filled with misinformation, alternative views and unfortunately old outdated theories. The other problem with the specialty of treating back pain is that it is open to a wide variety of health care providers both main stream and alternative. Therefore a person suffering doesn’t know where to turn.

In operating a multidisciplinary back and neck pain clinic I have had the privilege to work with a myriad of specialties including medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists and naturopaths and one thing is certain initially everyone has their own ideas based on what they where taught and also on their own experiences. It really is a shame because the medical literature does have many valid and promising studies published on effective treatments for low back pain.

The natural history of low back pain appears to be one of the main reasons this life altering condition hasn’t been dealt with properly. For example if pain is the primary indicator used it appears that most episodes of back pain go away within 6-10 weeks. This has been the bench mark for many first time sufferers and those routinely treated in medical clinics around the world. The problem with this form of measurement is that pain in and of itself is not a valid indicator of underlying function of the spine.

A study I think best describes this is one that was published in the prestigious journal SPINE in this study first time back pain sufferers where allocated to two groups one that received traditional medical management including medication and rest and the other a specific spinal rehabilitation program focusing on the deep spinal muscles. Prior to separating the groups however, they performed diagnostic ultrasound studies on the deep muscles of the lower back and saw a 30% decrease in size of the deep spinal muscles on the side of pain.

After 10 weeks everyone recovered fully which would seem to indicate that both treatments were equally successful. The ultrasounds were repeated and only the exercise group recovered the size of the deep spinal muscles. Both groups were no longer experiencing pain however. The biggest difference came when these researchers followed up at one and three year intervals. What they found was quite remarkable, at one year a full 84% of the medically managed group had another episode equal to or worse then the previous episode and at three years 73% of the 84% had another one, compared to 33% of the rehabilitation group.

What this study so clearly indicates is that even though the pain may be gone the functional changes secondary to back pain are still present and contribute to further episodes and disability. This is a powerful example of the need for specific early management using function and not pain as an indicator of response to care. At the Arizona Back Institute every patient goes through a rehabilitation process focusing on restoration of normal spinal strength for the appropriate age and weight matched categories. This ensures the highest probability of a long term recovery. If you have suffered from a recent episode my advice is find a clinic that focuses on function and not just on pain. In a later article I will explain why treatments like epidurals and surgery rarely give the patient the best opportunity at recovery. I will also give you some very effective non-surgical options that are safer and focus on a long term solution.

What is colon and colon cancer, how can you protect yourself against that.

Colon refers to the lower part of the intestine. For colon cancer to develop from early stage to last stage “malignant”, usually it would take up to 10 years. Early stages detection, would enabled the problem to be effectively treated and preventing it from developing into full blown cancer. Unfortunately, no or minimal symptoms is shown during that early stages.

In order to safeguard yourself, there are different steps you can adopt.

1. Lifestyle and diet pattern adjustment

While we cannot predict what is going to happen to us, we can however do things to prevent it from happen. There is a saying “Prevention is better than Cure”. Be aware of our own body and you can certainly protect your colon.
