The treatment of sciatica in early pregnancy?

I have 12 weeks with twins and last night I woke with a terrible back pain and low Left buttock. The pain is horrible and nothing I've tried so far has helped – a hot bath, heating pad and Tylenol. I will ask my doctor this morning, rises, but meanwhile, there is nothing I can do? From what I've read it seems that with sciatica, but I never knew that before I'm not sure. I need help. I have a child suffering from two years of asthma care, and my husband is out of town. Suggestions?

That hurts! I've never had my first child. It was a game children. I had sciatica at the beginning of my pregnancy. At first I had no idea what it was and Google. I mourn not used when the pain, but I wept with sciatica. It happened after three weeks. My midwife has confirmed that it was sciatica and said it should disappear within two weeks, but was 3 weeks when he finally left. My My doctor told me to take Tylenol, but I never did. I was lucky because my other son is only 16 so he could rest when I needed it. You can try Tylenol if it goes well with your physician. I left the past and hope that it will happen quickly.

Ok I'm at 2 1 / 2 months along. and my back is bad. I know why my hips hurt, I'm not worried about it (to be extended by nine months), but my back pain. My husband rubbed. and it is okay for some time. but he comes back … will be so for the rest of the series of seven months? Intermittent right upper quadrant pain that gets worse when I lift things or stand up for a while.?

I have been having a normal pregnancy, but last week was told I had a blood glucose of 158 after my diabetes test. Over the last few days I have noticed a worsening pain in my right upper quadrant, but not all the way to my ribs. The pain feels like something I want to grab and support, and goes from mild toward heavy burning but will begin to ache if I palpitate the area. If I sit down and lean back I can get complete relief, it is only when I get up again that it will start to hurt.
This is my fourth pregnancy and nothing like this has ever happened before, could it be a hernia or something? Is this what liver pain feels like? Am I just worrying about a muscle ache?

Yes, this could be related to a hernia or something with your liver or even a pulled muscle. I would recommend seeing your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they think is going on.

Get a special long pillow from a maternity shop. You hug it between your legs and it puts your hips and back in the right position. It also takes the pressure off your bump. This is the only thing that helped me, apart from paracetamol. It hurts because the weight of your bump pulls your spine forward and it is in a unatural posture.
Mention this to your midwife/doctor on your next visit because 18 weeks is a bit early for severe back pain.

What can I do for lower back pain during pregnancy, besides taking tylenol?

I am at 20 wks and have gained 10 lbs, all the weight is in my belly and it is pretty taxing on my back. Anyone have any tips on what helped you in your pregnancies.

You can get maternity massages, apply heat in 15 minute increments, buy a pregnancy belt (they sell these at maternity stores, its a belt that you wrap underneath your belly that tightens with velcro to help support your stomach so that your back doesn’t do all the work), buy a body or maternity pillow and sleep on your side with the pillow between your knees and under your stomach( this will help because it will keep your leg from falling forward pulling the tissue with it and torquing your back) and lastly if nothing seems to help, talk to our obgyn he may prescribe physical therapy.

Edit: Please don’t see a chiropractor, I have worked closely with chiropractors and they can help with some things like a rib out of alignment, but chiropractic work is usually ineffective because the whole reason that you’re out of alignment in the first place is because your muscles are tight and are pulling at the vertebrae. Forcing the vertebrae back into alignment only works temporarily because the muscle hasn’t been addressed and will be even tighter from the forced adjustment and yank the vertebrae right back out of place again in as little as a few days or as much as a week or two. Also my husband works in neurology and his department has been discouraging chiropractic work because they have seen patients paralyzed by chiropractic adjustments.(This happens when an adjustment is done and the vertebrae pierces a nerve) Any structural work, including deep massage (light maternity massage is fine and helps) is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Also only do 15 minutes of heat, any more might feel good at the time but can cause inflammation in the tissue which will only make you feel worse.

Just one more thing- moist heat is better than dry heat for muscle pain. I would recommend a rice bag that you heat in the microwave over a heating pad. It’s also a better idea to use a rice bag because it will cool down on its own and you won’t take the risk of overdoing the heat treatment.

Chiropractor and Pregnancy?

I have been having some rather uncomfortable lower back pains. I’ve talked to my OB about it and he suggested exercise and wearing flat shoes, which I am doing. He also said that I could see a chiropractor if it is really bad. Was just wondering if anyone has seen a chiropractor during their pregnancy? I have never seen one in my life and not sure what to expect, especially being pregnant. Thanks folks!

As a chiropractor, I treat my share of pregnant patients and get my share of referrals from OBs. I’ve found, as have my patients and their OBs, that a pregnant patient can get great relief from chiropractic care. At any stage of the pregnancy, it is safe and very effective. In fact, a pregnant patient has few other safe options. Physical therapy modalities are contraindicated during pregnancy and not a great time to be popping pain relievers. Oftentimes, the relief from chiropractic care for pregnant patients is not permanent since the pain is being caused by that growing baby in your belly. But you certainly get get good relief from treatment and it’s highly advisable. Your insurance will generally cover the treatments, so you have very little to lose. I would, in fact, as one other person responded, call ahead to see if the chiropractor is experienced in treating pregnant patients. Good luck.
