Lumbar Herniated Disc Herniation

lumbar herniated disc herniation

Herniated disc: In House Indicators disc herniation

Most disc injuries occur in the neck and lower back and place in the middle of the back are much less frequent. Disc injuries usually cause pain that radiates into one end. Herniation in the neck (cervical spine) compressing nerve pain often radiates into my arm hand and upper back. wounded discs lower back (lumbar) pain in the lower back and radiating down the leg toes often. Herniated disc in his lower back with often cause pain in the legs without pain in his lower back. Ninety percent of the time when you have a radiating pain in the leg the knee, which is connected to a disk compressed lumbar spine.

Three tests to low back home you can do to indicate whether a herniated disc is causing your pain are:

Test Position – Sit in a chair. Then frontage of his shoulder and let your account back to back results. Then raise one or two straight legs in front of you. If you have a radiating pain in the leg is likely to have a herniated disc lower back.

Lift the test leg – Bet on the floor face up. Keep your legs straight, lift both heels on the floor 6 inches. If you have pain radiating in the leg or legs or if you can not exercise your legs is likely to have a herniated disc lower back.

Tensile test of the leg – flat on his back at someone and pull gently but firmly into the leg to the ankle and foot. If your lower back or leg pain decreases is likely to have a herniated disk and the drive would be a good treatment.

Two tests to help you understand if you have a herniated cervical disc are:

Nerve upper limb tension testing – While sitting on the upper arm is horizontal to the ground and the right forearm toward the ceiling. Then bend the wrist back. Despite his wrist bends again extending his right arm, then push the right arm back. If this test causes pain radiating to the arm extended, so probably a herniated disc in his neck.

Cervical traction test – While sitting, place your hands over your ears, then gently lift the head, and apply traction in the neck. If pain decreases spinal decompression is probably a good response to treatment.

Diagnostic imaging is necessary be absolutely sure that you have a disc protrusion. MRI of the neck or lower back is better because it gives all the details only bone tissue but also soft nerve and the disc contains no X-ray exposure TC can also see a disc protrusion. CT is also better for the breakdown of bones and not very good for soft tissues. CT scans are usually cheaper and the use of X rays to produce images. In my opinion, MRI is clearly the first and best choice for all the image of a herniated disc.

Lumbar Herniated Disc Symptoms

lumbar herniated disc symptoms
16 year old with Degenerative Disc Disease?

I had an MRI today and the results were that I had two herniated discs and they said I had Degenerative Disc Disease. If anyone has had this, would you please tell me about the symptoms you had and if you had any pain. Thank you to all that answer and how did you over come it? Is this common in a 16 year old?

It is in the Thoratic Lumbar. I think it said L4 and L5.

Kate – The “spine” consists of many bones running from the neck to the bottom of the back. In order they are called cervical (C), thoracic (T), lumbar (L), and sacral (S). Between the spinal; bones (called vertebrae) there are soft cushions of cartilage and spaces through which nerves from the spinal cord exit and go to different muscles. Your problem appears to be between two vertebrae in the space called L4-L5 in the lower back just above the sacral tail bone. When the cartilage “degenerates” the inter-space narrows and there is pressure of the in-between nerve which then can and eventually does cause pain in the back, hip, and/or leg. The best physician to work with is a physiatrist (a physical medicine doctor) usually available at every hospital. Second choice is a neurologist. Initially some stretching exercises and changes in posture during the day and while sleeping may help give fastest relief. If all fails, there is now outpatient or same-day microsurgery which is available from either orthopedic surgeons or neurosurgeons. I, too, had similar disc disease but managed to recover years ago without surgery. I wish you luck, knowing how bad pain can sometimes be.

Slipped Disc???come to ‘ayurveda’ for Better Relief!!!

What is a disc?

The spine is made up of the vertebrae (the bones making up the spine), which have cartilage discs between them. The discs consist of a circle of connective tissue with a central gel-like core. This makes the spine flexible and at the same time acts as a protective buffer.

In the centre of this column of vertebrae and discs is the spinal canal, which contains the spinal cord and it continues as a bundle of nerve fibres called the cauda equina stretching down towards the sacrum. Between each vertebra, the spinal cord has nerve root connections to other parts of the body.

The spine is divided into three parts:

neck (cervical vertebrae)

chest (thoracic vertebrae)

the lower back (lumbar vertebrae).

The spine is connected to the ribs at the chest.

What is a slipped disc?

A slipped disc is when the soft part of the disc bulges through the circle of connective tissue. This prolapse may push on the spinal cord or on the nerve roots. However, it is worth noting that 20 per cent of the population have slipped discs without experiencing any noticeable symptoms.

The term ‘slipped disc’ does not really describe the process properly – the disc does not actually slip out of place, but bulges out towards the spinal cord.

What is the cause of a slipped disc?

Many factors increase the risk for slipped disc: (1) lifestyle choices such as tobacco use, lack of regular exercise, and inadequate nutrition substantially contribute to poor disc health. (2) As the body ages, natural biochemical changes cause discs to gradually dry out affecting disc strength and resiliency. (3) Poor posture combined with the habitual use of incorrect body mechanics, hard physical labour(delivery) can place additional stress on the spine.

Combine these factors with the effects from daily wear and tear, injury, incorrect lifting, or twisting and it is easy to understand why a disc may herniate. A herniation may develop suddenly or gradually over weeks or months.

At what age can a slipped disc occur?

A slipped disc in the lower back is most often seen between the ages of 30 and 50. In the cervical vertebrae around the neck, slipped discs are most often seen between the ages of 40 and 60.

A slipped disc occurs most often in the lumbar region of the spine especially at the L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels (L = Lumbar, S = Sacral). This is because the lumbar spine carries most of the body’s weight. People between the ages of 30 and 50 appear to be vulnerable because the elasticity and water content of the nucleus decreases with age.

What are the symptoms of a slipped disc?

A slipped disc can be symptom free. If it causes pain, it is primarily due to the pressure on the nerve roots, the spinal cord or the cauda equina.

Symptoms of nerve root pressure:

Paralysis of single muscles, possibly with pain radiating to the arms or legs. There may also be a disturbance of feeling in the limbs.

Symptoms of pressure on the spinal cord:

Disturbance of feeling, muscle spasms or paralysis in the part of the body below the spinal cord pressure. For example, pressure on the spinal cord in the chest area will cause spasms in the legs but not in the arms. Pressure on the spinal cord may cause problems with control of the bladder.

Symptoms of pressure on the cauda equina:

The symptoms can include loss of control of the bladder function, disturbance of feeling in the rectum and the inside of the thighs and paralysis of both legs. These are serious symptoms and anyone developing them should contact a doctor immediately.

What happens in an Ayurvedic session?

The initial consultation involves taking the total health history of the patient. A visual analyze is carried out by examining the eyes, color of the tongue, nails, skin, etc. Once the verbal and visual analyze are completed, further investigation involves examining the tender points (marma points). Focusing on these marma points the ayurvedic physician discovers the malfunctioning of the organs.

Based on these investigations, a final picture is drawn about the patient’s condition in relation to the three biochemical forces; vata pitta kapha. The dis-alignment of spinal vertebrae and musculo skeletal system is mainly concentrated and special attention is paid to the patient’s food habits and life style. With full history and investigation the ayurvedic physician determines the amount of treatment required. Usually the treatment period is 7/14/21/28 days according to the severity of the disease.

The Treatment usually involves a series of ABHYANGAM, SWEDAM, NASYAM, ELAKIZHI, NAVARAKIZHI, KATI VASTHI, KASHAYA VASTHI & ANUVASANA VASTHI etc. Marma chikitsa, Meru Chikitsa(Ayurvedic Neuro-Therapy) along with Vatahara chikitsa and Brumhana chikitsa are given utmost importance.

In four to six weeks, the majority of patients find their symptoms are relieved without surgery! Be optimistic about your treatment plan and remember that less than 5% of back problems require surgery!

Prevention

Aging is inevitable, but lifestyle changes can help prevent the disc disease. Risk factors include poor posture and body mechanics, weak Spinal muscles, smoking and obesity. Start now to adopt habits that will help preserve your spine for the future.

Lumbar Herniated Disc Chiropractor

How much is my Nevada car accident claim worth?

I live in Nevada, was involved in a rear end collision and sustained back and neck injuries. I have had CT scans, X-rays, and MRI’s all done, which concluded that I sustained a severe whiplash injury and I also have some herniated and bulging disks in my lumbar spine, along with extensive tendon/ ligament damage from the impact. I have been going to a chiropractor, physical therapy, and pain management and will hopefully be medically released in the next few weeks. I have been medically restricted from working for the last 12 weeks and have lost approximately $12,000 in wages. My medical bills have (so far) totaled up to $20,830. That is a total of $32,830 this has cost me! Being a rear end collision, the other driver was obviously at fault and I was curious if anybody might have some idea what this case could be worth?

No one here can tell you how much your claim might be “worth”. His insurance should pay for your medical bills, some of your lost wages and maybe something for pain and suffering. The insurance company is not going to hand you a big bag of cash and say “have a nice day”. You are not going to get rich from this accident

Lower Back Pain Chair

11/14/2010

lower back pain chair

Ergonomic Chairs are designed to maintain your comfort when performing work based activities throughout the day. It means that people who have back problems are more likely to choose this type of chair, for easing their back discomforts.

As an Occupational Therapist, my expertise is safety and ergonomic chairs have a potential danger for transferring in and out of the chair.

The ergonomic chair uses casters for moving the chair around easily in their work environment, but the majority of chairs do not have any locking mechanism on the casters. If people have discomforts in their back, they will be limited in their ability to flex forward at the hips, for ease of standing up. Our body has a way of compensating for this by leaning back on the chair that provides a pivot action for getting up. This is automatic and NOT CORRECT!

The reason is that the chair has the potential to move back, while attempting to stand up; because the casters on the ergonomic chair are designed to roll. If the chair rolls backwards, then you are likely to fall on the floor; which will then make the transfer even more difficult for you to get up from the floor with back pain.

Now you face the embarrassment of requesting help to get up off the floor. I can overcome this problem in another article.

All ergonomic chairs SHOULD have a locking mechanism on the casters; so that you have the option to you use the brakes or not. It is better to have them installed, before you consider purchasing an ergonomic chair.

Locking casters act as a braking mechanism for preventing injuries to your skeletal joints, when performing daily living activities in an ergonomic chair.

This is important when you are limited in functional mobility, due to any skeletal discomforts such as back pain that limits your ability to move safely.

Ergonomic chairs are important for comfort, because they provide support to your skeletal joints in performing activities. There are dangers in performing any activities when you are limited in your ability to perform them normally.

The author Gail McGonigal is a qualified Occupational Therapist, who has her own internet company: http://www.activelivingsolutions.net Gail currently sells Ergonomic Chairs for comfortable active living.

Gail is offering a free “Therapeutic Active Living Plan” with each chair. It is a program that helps each person individually, starting from a baseline of inactivity, to correct positioning for movement, through a therapeutically safe and comfortable movement plan for increasing productive activity, decreasing weight and leading to a more active quality of life.

Gail wants to show you how you can overcome your problems that are cyclical – from inactivity to weight gain to pain and stiffness. It is a revolving door of no solution and no ending without her intervention.

Herniated Disc Bowel

MEDICAL EMERGENCY!! My Brother had back surgery because he had a bulging disk (5L) and it herniated?

My brother was diagnosed with a bulging 5L disk 4 yrs. ago. He was lifting something heavy(stupid move) and his disk herniated which he lost feeling in all of his private areas. No feeling in his penis or his butt- nothing. They did emergency surgery on him and they said alot of his nerves were damaged- but they put the disk back and cleaned it out real good-BUT- after surgery he still has no feeling in these areas. They showed him how to give his self a cathadar(which he doesn’t feel) and he has big hemorroids and he hasn’t had a bowel movement in 9 days-even after taking (altogether in a 4 day period) 8 laxatives- enemas, drank a whole bottle of that laxative they give you the night before surgery- that is over the counter. He called the dr. and told them and they said not to worry about it -its caused from the pain meds(hydrocodone). I have a hard time believeing this is normal. They said he may not get his feeling back because of the nerve damage. What about his bowels moving???

I had 2 back surgeries within 3 months time and yes the pain medicine will make you constipated. If he has not had a bowel movement in 9 days I think I would go back to the doctor because you don’t want the bowel to become impacted and kink up the intestines. If he has to continue on pain medicine it is a daily battle to keep the bowels working. Prune juice, prunes anything that will help the system he is going to have to do this on a DAILY basis as long as he is on regular doses of pain medicines.

Micro lumbar discectomy (MLD) of spine surgery in India – Low Cost

Micro Discectomy lumbar (DAM) spine surgery

Since the initial description of an intervertebral disk hernia as a cause of sciatica (pain radiating to the back of the leg) in 1934, an operation to relieve this pain has undergone considerable refinement. Back causes compression of a nerve root pain in the lower leg, back pain and sometimes nerve dysfunction. Usually the pain starts in the lower back, then spreads in the leg with numbness, tingling and leg weakness. The cause is a herniated or bulging of the intervertebral disc material diminished in the spinal canal compressing the nerve root lining. Among those more more for bone growth (osteophytes) can compress the nerve. Diagnosis depends on the history of pain, physical examination of the patient,

Anatomical changes observed with CT or MRI of the spine:

  • The pain of back and limbs, usually the back of leg
  • The pain and limited collection of the leg with the patient lying on his back
  • The loss of sensation in the leg
  • The weakness of specific muscle groups in the leg
  • Loss of knee and ankle reflexes
  • CT / MRI showing compression of a nerve root by disc material or osteophytes

Case History: lumbar disc herniation, sciatica, pain and numbness

PS is a homemaker and mother of 30 who had suffered recurrent episodes of low back pain for the past 10 years. The pain was more severe in the last two years. One month before admission to hospital, she woke up with excruciating pain in the lower back with numbness and pain in the rear right leg. She complained of leg weakness and weakness progressed, although the pain had improved.

The review showed pain when his right leg was passive high. There a weakness in the muscles that flex the foot at the ankle, numbness of the bite is on top of the foot. The reflexes at the knee and ankle are normal.

A MR image shows a fragment of a herniated disc compressing very large right L5 nerve root of. Microlumbar discectomy was carried out due to treatment failure conservative and the presence of pain and weakness. He left the hospital the same day and enjoyed immediate relief of sciatic pain almost complete.

Weakness greatly improved, but the numbness persists. Comment: The L5 nerve root is usually the result compressed by a fragment of disc material that prolapse disk space between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae. The root of the nerve controls the muscles of the lifting of the foot in the ankle, the height of the big toe foot, feeling on top of the foot …
