Herniated Disc C5 C6–Causes and Treatment

What is a herniated disc?

A disc is made up of two components. One is the centre and the other is the outer ring. When a disc comes under pressure, its central part tears out of its protective outer ring. A disc in this state is called herniated disc, ruptured disc, protruded disc, bulged disc, prolapsed disc and slipped disc. It presses against the nerve root located close to it and causes unbearable pain.

What is herniated disc C5-C6?

The vertebral column has 23 discs. The part of the spinal column that deals with the neck area, called cervical spine, consists of seven discs. Each one of them is named with the letter C followed by its placement in the descending order. Thus we have disc C5-C6.

Causes of the herniated disc C5 C6

Herniated C5-C6 disc is usually caused by several factors. They are injury from accident or fall, sports related activities, deterioration due to ageing, sleeping with more than one pillow under the neck, twisting or bending the neck beyond endurance, etc. All these activities exert a lot of strain on the cervical spine.

Treatment of herniated C5-C6

Treatment of the herniated C5-C6 depends upon the nature of injury it has suffered. If the injury is simple, it can be treated at home by do-it-yourself methods. Some of these are:

1. Massage

You can gently massage the affected area with balm. It is likely to relax the surrounding muscles and tissues. You can also ask your friend to do it.

2. Ice packs

Put the   ice on the painful area and allow it to stay for 10-15 minutes until you feel a numbness, which is another word for having no sensation of pain. Repeat this process every one or two hours.

3. Hot treatment

You may use hot water bottle on the skin. The heat dilates the nerves and tissues and allows more blood with oxygen to rush in. Hot treatment can thus speed up the healing process.

If these methods fail to bring relief, consult your specialist.

Are you suffering from back pain due to herniated disc C5 C6? It does not matter that you have suffered from it for 10, 15 or even 30 years. Herniated Disc Treatments Spine

2nd opinion about back pain?

I have a herniated disc that is compressing my nerve in my L4/L5 region and my back doctor has said that it is a pretty bad herniation. I also have some narrowing of the spine and arthritis in my lower back. I am only 21 years old, female, and about 15 pounds overweight. I have had 2 facet joint block injections in my back with celestone and it has offered me no relief, and I experience an increase in pain afterwards. I recently saw a back surgeon and he said that I am not a candidate for back surgery, which is fine by me because I think that I am way too young to have any surgery. However, I experience excrutiating pain when I sit down that travels into my hips and down the front of my legs. Sometimes it gets so bad that I cannot sit for more than ten minutes at a time which is a problem because I am still in school. Is there any other treatment out there besides these injections that I should ask my doctor about, should I go to a different specialist?

Try a TENS unit. I have one by Empi, and it makes a huge difference. When I am wearing it (and have taken my meds), I can actually be pain free, and my back issues are very similar to your own.

Natural Herniated Disc Healing

08/22/2011

>>>>NJ medical marijuana question<<<

I suffer from a herniated L5-S1 disc and am wondering if i can apply for a card. I’m very curious because the pain i suffer from is there all day, and i can do little to take away the pain. Oxycodone and flexeril help slightly but i hate taking medication. I would rather deal with the horrible pain then to take those medicines, call me insane but I feel that if I take these meds then i will become dependent on them and become addicted to them.

I know marijuana isn’t addictive and its a more natural healing option then oxycodones and all other pain meds.

I’ll be 18 when the law takes effect and really want to try it.

I do smoke weed now but it is only to help my severe chronic back pain. Im worried if i mention this to my doctor that he will think that im so marijuana feign and taking advantage of the new law, im not.

Bottom line: Is/will chronic pain by added to the list of conditions that can be solved by medical marijuana.

Probably not. Right now it’s only for super harsh stuff. If they gave it for pain, even chronic pain, almost all of us would be in the line for something or other.

PS they’ll probably drug test you before hand anyway.

Herniated Disc Upper Spine

08/13/2011

What is a Herniated disc

When some people hear the term “herniated disc,” they wince in pain. For anyone that has ever had this condition, they can relate to the pain that can be incurred when this happens. Fortunately, today’s medical doctors have developed therapies and treatments to alleviate and sometimes eliminate the pain that comes with a herniated disc.

What is a Herniated Disc?

Discs made of cartilage separate the vertebrae in the back from each other and provide cushioning during movement of the spine. The cartilage has a strong outer layer and a softer inner layer and when it is injured or just worn out from aging, the inner part of the disc can bulge out from between the vertebrae bones and compress or irritate a nerve, or even damage it.

Also called a ruptured disc, it can happen anywhere along the spine, although most herniated discs are located in the lumbar or lower region of the back. The second most common area for a herniated disc is in the upper cervical vertebrae, or neck area.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Where the herniated disc is located will determine where the individual will feel pain. A lumbar ruptured disc will be felt in the legs and most likely in only one leg. Pain is experienced in the upper thigh and buttocks, the groin and occasionally in the foot or the lower back. It may cause tingling or numbness and even muscle weakness in the affected leg. When a disc is ruptured in the neck, the person will feel pain in the shoulder blade, under the arm and down the arm to a couple of fingers. Arm muscles become weaker, with a lessening of the grip of the hand. A sudden cough, sneeze or movement may intensify the pain, and it may come and go spontaneously, or may be constant. A physician can diagnose where the pain is coming from with a few simple tests in the office.

Diagnosis

The patient’s accurate description of the pain caused by the herniated disc will help a physician establish where it is coming from. The doctor will check for areas of tenderness along the spine, as well as perform a few coordination, muscle strength and reflex tests. If the pain is severe enough, an MRI or CT scan may be ordered to get a better look at the disc. Both MRI and CT scans can show the contrast of tissues to determine how badly the disc is ruptured.

Herniated Disc Treatment

Each individual will react differently to various types of management, and specific treatments will be tailored to the sufferer according to the patient’s lifestyle, weight and tolerance. While some people may need only bed rest, massage and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, others may benefit from physical therapy, electrical nerve stimulation, epidurals or prescription pain medication. Advanced diagnostic procedures such as discography can help physicians determine whether the pain is coming from more than one disc and can help treat the affected discs more quickly and accurately.

back surgery is occasionally an option, and with minimally invasive techniques available, it is not a bad choice. A herniated disc is treatable with a significant reduction of pain with a mixture of solutions.

Lumbar Herniated Disc Treatments

08/11/2011

I have slightly herniated disks in the cervical (neck) area (2 disks) and also the?

lumbar (lower back) area (3 disks) with beginning stage of degeneritive disk diesease and also causing siatica. What is the best treatment for this? anyone have this?

The best treatment is what ever works best for YOU. Sometimes physical therapy can be helpful or they may recommend surgery or other treatments. Lots of people have disc problems but the treatment varies depending on the severity etc. Since you have some that is degerative meaning it is just rather progressive you need to talk to your orthopedic doc and decide what treatments or surgeries to try. If treatment fails for you or surgery doesn’t work or is not an option for you be sure to see a pain management doctor to help you keep your pain under control. My best friend is now on disablility as she does not want to try surgery given that hers is so far progressed and there is nothing more they can offer her except medication etc. See your doctor and let him help you decide what treatments would work best for YOUR specific condition.

Herniated Disc Questions

07/22/2011

Hi, I'm scheduled for an MRI scan of what appears to be a herniated disc in the upper back (neck). My question is:

I jaw surgery and I'm sure I have metal …. and when he was 18 years (now 46) who had a lobe of my left lung removed (common pneumothorax) and not so sure he did not use a kind of staples at the moment … . If fear of making the MRI …

Should have used an implant-grade titanium, which is right in the RM. Your technician will ask metals in your body and you will be able to decide what is best. Sure they know.

Herniated Disc Back Injury

herniated disc back injury
Is the risk high for me playing ball with this type of back injury(please read!!)?

I have a herniated disc for about 6 months. The last time I played ball was sometime last year in the summer. Its a warm day outside and I wanna go play basketball.I live in nyc and it really hasnt been warm that lately.
Will be ok for me to play basketball?I actually have no idea when this is gonna heal,it could be years from now.Im actually doing physical therapy for my back now. They told me they wouldnt recommend me to do play ball but if I do it,make sure I do the back and scretching exericses.
Is it safe for me to play ball?has anybody played ball with a herniated disc?I also have a back brace that I plan on wearing if I do play basketball

Listen to what your physical therapist says as he/she has the best idea as to your current condition and whether you would tolerate playing ball right now. There is too much variability in herniated discs to say definitely yes or no to playing by someone who doesn’t know your current condition.

herniated disc causes neck
Herniated disc in his neck? And numbness?

Has anyone had a herniated disc in his neck and numbness expercied? My face is, ears numb, lips, inside my mouth, my neck and my head as my feet and my hands were numb. My neck and face is still numb all ITME without feelings, including the lips of my mouth and my ears are tingling. I have a herniated disc in his neck, but doctors are saying that it would not cause such numbness. I'v also had an MRI on my back and my head all over the world come right. All ideas?

Second opinion. A herniated disc usually causes numbness and tingling that you mentioned. In general, causes pain when there is a general numbness, isolated on the shoulders or arms. Could be more than able to explain their symptoms. The only other possibility that can cause this is if the hernia is no doubt affect the spinal cord. Get a second opinion More sooner than later.
