Take Steps To Prevent Exercise Injuries

If you want to lose weight, you definitely need to exercise, but the one thing that you do not want to happen to you is an injury.  This is something that will ruin your routine, cause pain, and add to your medical bills especially if it’s a somewhat serious injury.  When you do exercise, you need to do your best to prevent all these injuries.

In order to do this, you need to start off with having proper form.  There are thousands of different types of exercises.  Each one of them has a proper form that you should be following in order to do the motion in a safe way.  Use a mirror and look at your motion or have someone critique you so that you can perfect your form and stay safe.

Stop an exercise if it becomes too painful especially if it’s joint pain.  You will feel some of your muscles be challenged, but pain is much different.  If you aren’t sure stop so you don’t hurt yourself.

Be sure that at some point during your routine that you stretch.  Some argue that stretching before is best while others argue that it’s best to stretch afterwards.  Regardless what you believe, stretching is needed to prevent injury.

Drink plenty of water.  Many injuries can be cause from being too dehydrated.  You don’t want to have heat related illnesses and lack of water especially on the hot summer days.

You need to have a warm up and a cool down with each workout.  This will give your body time to be challenged and a point where you can relax a bit before stopping.

Listen to your body.  If you are too sore or in too much pain to work out that day, don’t do it.  This isn’t to be used as an excuse.  Only do this when it’s real pain.

Padding in your shoes is important to reduce impact.  Protect all your joints as best as you can.

If you still have the year with a sore lower back?

I just turned 48 and have been exercising 3-4 times a week for 2 1 / 2 weeks. In fact, I ran with my cat and knees slammedonto the kitchen floor. I was wrong since it arrived last week.

Warm muscles, but no pressure on them. They need some action to distribute the lactic acid (which is what hurts), but emphasizing will worsen the injury. The heat will make them feel better, too. Motrin every 4-6 hours, up to 800 mg if necessary. I know what you mean. I have a book 12, 10 months kittens wake up each morning (meow that Brrrrr) for breakfast at 6. I get up to get him, but it took me the whole trip. If I do not see how fast that (not fast), start or trip. Erg! My daughter's cat is promoting through May … one wonders if it's worth? Oh well, I guess. lol TX Mom 46 years

What are some good workouts to do if you have back pain?

Walking and workout dvds are not an option, those hurt too. I have back pain (most likely due to weight gain,this has happened before)what are some exercises/workouts I can do to start out until the pain goes away.

I was thinking elliptical machine or yoga. Or is yoga not recommended for people with back pain??

Great question!

Just for a minute, consider that the cause of your back pain may actually be directly related to the cause of your weight gain?

Yes, it’s true that the additional stress, tension and pressure from the added weight definitely contributes to your back pain; however, I would suspect that’s only one factor.

Believe it or not, most people misunderstand fat. People believe that it’s additional calories, fats or carbs that “cause” fat – but, the truth is that fat is actually designed to protect you!

In fact, your fat may be saving your life!

The foods that we eat can cause a highly acidic and toxic effect on the body (fat is a symptom, but also is back pain).

What is a Herniated disc

When some people hear the term “herniated disc,” they wince in pain. For anyone that has ever had this condition, they can relate to the pain that can be incurred when this happens. Fortunately, today’s medical doctors have developed therapies and treatments to alleviate and sometimes eliminate the pain that comes with a herniated disc.

What is a Herniated Disc?

Discs made of cartilage separate the vertebrae in the back from each other and provide cushioning during movement of the spine. The cartilage has a strong outer layer and a softer inner layer and when it is injured or just worn out from aging, the inner part of the disc can bulge out from between the vertebrae bones and compress or irritate a nerve, or even damage it.

Also called a ruptured disc, it can happen anywhere along the spine, although most herniated discs are located in the lumbar or lower region of the back. The second most common area for a herniated disc is in the upper cervical vertebrae, or neck area.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Where the herniated disc is located will determine where the individual will feel pain. A lumbar ruptured disc will be felt in the legs and most likely in only one leg. Pain is experienced in the upper thigh and buttocks, the groin and occasionally in the foot or the lower back. It may cause tingling or numbness and even muscle weakness in the affected leg. When a disc is ruptured in the neck, the person will feel pain in the shoulder blade, under the arm and down the arm to a couple of fingers. Arm muscles become weaker, with a lessening of the grip of the hand. A sudden cough, sneeze or movement may intensify the pain, and it may come and go spontaneously, or may be constant. A physician can diagnose where the pain is coming from with a few simple tests in the office.

Diagnosis

The patient’s accurate description of the pain caused by the herniated disc will help a physician establish where it is coming from. The doctor will check for areas of tenderness along the spine, as well as perform a few coordination, muscle strength and reflex tests. If the pain is severe enough, an MRI or CT scan may be ordered to get a better look at the disc. Both MRI and CT scans can show the contrast of tissues to determine how badly the disc is ruptured.

Herniated Disc Treatment

Each individual will react differently to various types of management, and specific treatments will be tailored to the sufferer according to the patient’s lifestyle, weight and tolerance. While some people may need only bed rest, massage and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, others may benefit from physical therapy, electrical nerve stimulation, epidurals or prescription pain medication. Advanced diagnostic procedures such as discography can help physicians determine whether the pain is coming from more than one disc and can help treat the affected discs more quickly and accurately.

back surgery is occasionally an option, and with minimally invasive techniques available, it is not a bad choice. A herniated disc is treatable with a significant reduction of pain with a mixture of solutions.

Sciatic Nerve Leg Pain – Alleviate This Pain

Sciatic nerve leg pain can vary from a slight twinge to severe pain running from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg. Sciatica is a set of symptoms caused by the sciatic nerve which is one of the widest and longest nerves in the human body. The pain is caused by this nerve being pinched or trapped form an injury of some sort and may remain for some time.

There are many treatments for sciatic nerve leg pain available from exercise, drugs and in some severe cases surgery but the most important thing to do first is to seek professional advice as the wrong treatment could make your pain a lot worse. Go to your local GP or Chiropractor and these professionals will provide the best treatment for you.

A few years ago I injured my back while lifting a heavy object incorrectly and ended up with sciatic nerve leg pain and this pain prevented me from doing one of my favourite pastimes of going to local football games as I found standing almost impossible, Walking was no problem but standing around was very difficult and to find a seat was like gold so as to relieve the pain.

At the time of this injury I worked in the haulage business and found it almost impossible to drive a truck without stopping every ten or so miles. If I drove twenty which at times I had no choice on motorways my leg would go numb with severe pain. The pain would usually start in the buttock and travel down the leg so I was constantly trying to think of ways to alleviate this pain.

One evening after work I got a piece of wood about two feet by one foot to sit on, and cut a hole out of one side so there would be no pressure on the bone on the buttock and covered the seat with some padding. The following day I couldn’t wait to try out my new device and to my surprise the sciatic nerve leg pain was much better and after some minor adjustments the numbness and pain disappeared.

Now I am not saying this will work for you but it might be worth looking into as a cheap pain reliever for sciatic nerve leg pain.

any tips for relief on back pain?

I have chronic back pain since I was a child.
it’s only gotten worse the older I’ve gotten and I’m just really sick and tired of going to the doctor and being referred to a specialist and then referred to another specialist. It’s extremely frustrating and painful. I know for a fact that I have like 3 herniated disks but they don’t think that the disks are causing the pain because my pain is elsewhere. At this point the pain is from the lower back all the way to the upper portion.

They are wrong. You have pinched muscles in your back that is the cause of the pain. Pinched muscles are the only things in your back that can put enough pressure on the discs long enough for them to end up giving out, so the muscle problems created the disc problems. The tightness may have moved over time or you are feeling what is the tightest pinched ones in your back at this time and they aren’t the same ones where the discs gave out by. To get rid of the pain you have to free up your back muscles and that will take the pressure off the discs as well, both with the one release. Here’s how to free them up to get rid of the pains:
Back:
(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side. If any pain remains repeat this.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

I pulled the muscles in my weight back to lift the other day and the day after my testicle started to hurt and be a big pain as if I had the blue balls in a testicle, and pain in the back goes I have yet slight pain in my right testicle especially in my times going to my left, however, my bad again on the left side. Anyone know why this happened or may be related please give me advice before looking through your doctor.
