Nearly 90% of American adults suffer from back pain, and the number continues to climb. Why does this condition affect so many people in the industrialized world, while in some countries only 5% of adults report back pain? In a quest to find the root cause of back pain, Esther Gokhale studied at the Aplomb Institute in Paris and traveled to parts of the world where back pain is virtually unknown. …

Whenever a new female patient presents into my Chiropractic practice with low back pain, one of the first possibilities to consider is that they are pregnant. Back pain and pregnancy seem to go hand in hand. This is due to the increase in hormones causing significant muscle and ligamentous relaxation.
Why do pregnant women get back pain? How can chiropractic care help with their pain?
Several changes occur in a women’s body during the nine months of gestation. They produce a variety of hormones that are all part of preparing the women’s body for the development and birth of the newborn. One of these hormones is called relaxin. Release of the hormone relaxin causes muscle and ligament relaxation. This aids in the joints becoming more mobile and more easily to distort. As the pelvis “relaxes” and the uterus begins to grow and they have increased weight gain the women’s center of balance changes and an increased stress is placed on the spine and surrounding musculature structures. This increases the stress on the related spinal curves, ligaments and muscles up the spine. The abdominal muscles become overstretched and this also in turn increases the weight bearing load on the spinal structures.
Depending on your level of physical fitness prior to the pregnancy, your body may not be as well prepared for the changes if they happen quickly.
As a result of the physiological and biomechanical changes in their bodies, some women experience chronic lower back, mid back pain and neck pains throughout their pregnancy. Some women may only experience postural and physical concerns. Chiropractic care may help to stabilise them and enable them to develop a better posture that puts less stress into certain spinal areas and less pressure on their body. A pelvic subluxation, or misalignment may possibly inhibit the baby’s development in utero.
One of the most common, safe, effective and gentle approaches to treating back pain while pregnant is with chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments are especially gentle during pregnancy as far less force is required to correct spinal misalignments. Special low force adjusting techniques and positions are also used to provide comfort and safety for both mom and fetus. Most chiropractors have been trained in using the procedures on pregnant women, hence it is generally safe and gentle.
Pregnancy Benefits of Chiropractic Care
Before women even undergo labor, the recommendations to undergo chiropractic care may help them in several ways. It includes the following:
• maintaining an optimum level of health
• strengthen and stabilise symptomatic areas that may be weak
• may decrease labor and deliver time
• may provide relief from pain in the neck, back, or joints.
• may decrease the likelihood of a caesarian section
Some Recommendations During Pregnancy:
1. Posture Ask your chiropractor for specific postural exercises to help you maintain the corrections you have made.
2. Plenty of Rest Your body is working overtime! Get lots of rest and use pillows and supports to ensure that you are comfortable and able to sleep.
3. Stay Fit Try to stay active with non weight bearing activities like swimming and stretching. Walking is good as long as your not in a lot of discomfort. Don’t over do it, just maintain a comfortable level of exercise.
4. Attend Classes It is important to attend pre-natal workshops especially if this is your first child. It gets your partner involved and also helps to prepare you for what is to come! It is great also to meet with others who are going through the same experience as you. The classes are often a great source of information.
Along with these recommendations the others are obvious, don’t drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, or do drugs. Don’t do heavy lifting and keep stress to a minimum. These are all important aspects to address as you progress through your pregnancy. Try and eat a diet of whole foods and high in nutrients and vitamins. Fruits, vegetables preferably organic produce, and drink plenty of clean fresh water.
Chiropractic has successfully been treating pregnant women with back pain for over 100 years. Modern methods and techniques and professional standards have helped to ensure the most effective, safe and gentle procedures are used.

Many of us know that there is a strong connection between what we think and how we feel, but just how can something as abstract as a thought have such a powerful affect on our bodies? Perhaps an answer can be found by looking at the mind and body as part of a complex information system.
First of all from a scientific perspective a thought consists of the transmission of electrochemical impulses throughout a network of brain cells called neurons. The neurons talk to each other by making connections with other neurons and secreting little packets of chemicals called neurotransmitters. The brain is so complex that it has been said to contain nearly ten billion neurons. Each of these ten billion neurons can connect with up to ten thousand other neurons. The possible connections actually exceed the number of known particles in the universe!
Each packet of neurotransmitter can be thought of as a tiny set of instructions telling another neuron what to do. The instructions can tell the next neuron to fire an impulse to another neuron or to hold the impulse back by inhibiting it. The billions of instructions going on in our brains represent a vast information network.
So how does the information network of the brain communicate with the body? Or to put it another way, where does the mind end and the body begin? This is a tough question to answer because depending on how you look at it there is no definitive dividing line between mind and body. Both are intimately interconnected. The body is also a complex information system.
The body has thousands of feedback systems that rely on a constant flow of information and these systems are connected to the nervous system. For example the nervous system constantly monitors blood pressure. The nervous system senses an increase or decrease in blood pressure and responds by sending information to the heart and blood vessels to stabilize the pressure.
This complex connection between mind and body not only keeps things working properly but can also have negative effects on your health. For example, in times of stress a part of the nervous system called the sympathetic nervous system takes over and secretes neurotransmitters such as adrenaline. Adrenaline causes your heart rate and blood pressure to increase as well as your digestion to shut down. The sympathetic nervous system is so interconnected with the organs in your body that the effects of stress can be profound. For example, prolonged periods of stress can affect the digestive system so much that an ulcer can develop.
Another pathway between mind and body is called the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. The hypothalamus is located deep in the brain and is affected by thoughts and emotions. It connects with the pituitary gland that secretes a number of hormones some that target the adrenal gland. One important hormone secreted by the adrenal gland in times of stress is cortisol. Cortisol increases blood sugar levels and blood pressure. High levels of cortisol can put stress on other organs and contribute to disease.
The important point is that the stress coming from the nervous system originates as a series of thoughts in the brain. These thoughts are physical things and can elicit a physical effect on the body. The thoughts come from our perceptions. Stress is something that is perceived. You can choose to perceive a certain situation as stressful or not.
This mind-body connection can be used to heal. The science of psychoneuroimmunology studies the effects of the mind on the body. Mind-body healing has been shown to be effective in a host of illnesses and diseases such as high blood pressure, stress, increased immunity, pain control, and many others.
One effective mind-body technique that anyone can do is called guided imagery. In guided imagery you are guided through a process of relaxation followed by creating an image of your pain or disease. The image is then replaced by an image of health or healing. The technique is performed frequently, often daily and lasts anywhere from ten minutes to an hour. Some people become very adept at imagery after practicing the technique and can experience benefits from just ten minutes a day.
Guided imagery is a simple yet effective tool in a healing regimen. I have used this technique frequently and found it to be very beneficial in helping with a variety of health problems. Mind-body healing is one way to help support your body’s many information systems and help you to heal by maintaining a positive flow of information.

Some people think they are constipated if they do not have a bowel group every day. However, normal stool removal may be three times a day or three times a week, depending on the person.
Constipation means dissimilar things to different people. For many people, it simply means uncommon stools. For others, however, constipation means hard stools, complexity passing stools (straining), or a sense of partial emptying after a bowel pressure group.
Constipation is determined in the colon (large intestine), which is in charge for packaging and eliminate stool.
As food moves from end to end the colon, it absorbs water while forming stool. Muscle contractions (squeezing motions) in the colon push the stool in the direction of the rectum (the lower 8 to 10 inches of the large intestine).
Causes of Constipation
1. Do you have a painful state, such as piles (haemorrhoids) or anal fissure? If transitory faeces is painful, constipation is a probable result.
2. If you are women, do you have to put a finger in your vagina on the way to help pass the stool from the back passage? This most likely means you have a rectocele, a weakness in the supporting tissues between the vagina and rectum.
3. If you are women, did the constipation start after childbirth or after hysterectomy? Hysterectomy may sometimes damage the delicate nerve fibres linked to the bowel.
4. Have you gained weight and tend to feel the cold, maybe with dry or thinning hair? You might have an underactive thyroid, which can also cause constipation.
Symptoms of Constipation
Constipation continuing over a long period may lead to swelling of the stomach and severe discomfort. If you feel constipation continue for some time, it may lead to a feeling of like:
1. Heaviness in the abdomen 2. Headaches 3. Lethargy 4. Nausea 5. Loss of appetite 6. Vomiting
Constipation Treatment
Constipation is decrease in the regularity of stool (i.e. body’s waste product) or problem in the formation or passage of stool. It is a very common problem. It is a myth that if you don’t have a bowel movement daily, you are constipated.
In fact, there are not as such defined numbers of bowel movements for a day. These can vary from person to person, depending on their diet and lifestyle. As per doctors, if you have less than three bowel movements in a week, you are definitely constipated.
Home Remedies for Constipation
Regular drinking of water is highly beneficial for cleaning the system. Normally 6-8 glasses of water are recommended for digesting and dissolving the food nutrients.
Eating chapatti made of wheat (two parts) and roast black gram powder (one part) along with their husk is also beneficial and is good constipation remedy.
To make good home remedy for constipation take 2 tablespoons of Blackstrap molasses before going to sleep. Molasses are high in calories. It has a strong taste, though; you may want to add it to milk, fruit juice, or prune juice etc.
Walking 4-5 kms. After dinner is highly useful as it helps in the digestion of food.
Half cup cabbage juice taken twice-daily cures constipation. Mango is a natural reliever of constipation.
Dip 10-12 dry grapes without seeds in milk and boil the milk. Drink the milk disjointedly and chew the grapes. This is more beneficial when taken at night. This is one of the useful home remedies for constipation.

Almost any way you look at it, the Carly Simon of the ’70s was pretty cool. Her acerbic wit and nasally expressive voice had people comparing her to Carole King, but there was also a weary androgyny to her that wouldn’t be seen again until the arrival of Chrissy Hynde. Her songs rocked without quite being rock songs, and were folk-evocative without falling into the singer-songwriter bins. She scor…

hii.. I am 22 year old girl and lately I have been practicing yoga(not regularly though) through a website called yogatic.com. The instructor posts the videos which I follow.
The problem is that I have a 30 inch waist and am 5.5 feet tall. I am unable to do the exercises which she does at ease. my shoulder and neck start paining wen i do certain postures.. Am i doing it the wrong way?
Can I really reduce my stomach if i follow those exercises?
Also, i have a small projection towards the back of my neck.. not projection, but its more like a fat deposit. i think it is due to the lack of exercise.. can you suggest anything for this?
and if possible please suggest any more exercises to reduce my tummy. Thanks a lot people!!!
Anytime you start something new, it will be hard, and you probably won’t be very good at it. That’s why they say “practice makes perfect.” This is true with Yoga especially. You really have to be patient with yourself. Do your best, even if you aren’t nailing the form straight on, just do the best you can. If something is causing you pain, back off, adjust the pose, or don’t do it. Here’s something that I always remember- do you know who Hugh Jackman is? Well, he’s an actor right? Wolverine in the X-Men movies and stuff. Well, for his movie “The Fountain” he had to hold the lotus position. (Where you sit cross legged, but each foot is up on the thigh). Now, Hugh Jackman seems like a really fit guy, right? Well, it took him 6 months of training to be able to do that position. So, it’s not just you that struggles. Everyone has to practice to get better.
