lower back pain support
Planks causing shoulder/lower back pain?

I am a fairly flexible person and I am “double jointed” meaning I overextend some of my limbs, particularly my arms. When doing a front plank on my forearms for extended periods of time my shoulders hurt for several days after. I can do the side plank with my hand and arm up in the air just fine with a little shaking but the normal front plank I can barely finish as it begins to hurt and I don’t really know what I am suppose to be feeling in my abdominal area.

Any suggestions on how not to cause the pain? I am in in the correct position, no butt in the air and flat back. Doing it on my knees offers a bit more support but I know I can support my weight (thus completely uplifted side planks) and embarrassed if I have to do it with my knees.

icevalkyrie,

Perhaps this is an issue of muscles that can get the job done but are overly stressed out. Try the following:

- Basic Cobra Pose (based on Cobra Yoga Pose): Lay face down on a mat. Arms by your sides palms down. Keep your face down with your chin near your chest and lift your upper body up with your back muscles.

- Basic Fish Pose (based on Fish Yoga Pose): Lay flat on your back on a mat. Arch your back and push up with your elbows keeping your chin near your chest so your head does not tilt.

- Then do the same thing as the cobra pose, but instead of lifting your upper body, lift your legs.

Do that regularly and the pain should disappear in time. It will strengthen the relevant muscles and get things feeling better.

Good luck,
John
