Osteoporosis is a common disease and a vertebral compression fracture occurs in the USA every 7 minutes. It is generally a painful and debilitating disease causing the following:
- Collapse of vertebrae, the bones forming the spine
- Reduction of pulmonary capacity because of the chest cavity collapse that occurs when several or many vertebrae collapse
- Fractures elsewhere
- Difficulty with ambulation because of spine pain and disability
It is a progressive disease that particularly effects the spine
Various medications are available to try to stop the disease. Those include Fosamax and others. The disease is poorly understood.
Some patients have MORE than just osteoporosis, including disc problems, spondylosis, osteoarthritis, as well as compression fractures. Dr. Burres has dealt with these complex spine problems and you can contact him and let him know.
