Dr Kenneth P Burres says....

Hi... There are many procedures available to deal with spinal problems. Spine surgery has actually been available since the 1880s and disc surgery since 1938. I have listed those procedures that are more commonly available.

Do you have a spine problem and want a definitive solution? Call toll-free 1-877-928-7737 or E-mail Dr Burres or our patient advocate or fax your pertinent information to 1-909-625-4504

Replacing an injured or degenerative disc sounds very attractive. . . out with the old and in with the new! Such procedures are available and touted by those who do them. Is this something you should consider seriously? Read on. . .

The technology is not in its infancy and has been available in Europe for over 15 years.

What is the reality?

  • The operation is well-known and is through the abdomen and has a myriad of complications and is a long surgery. Complications including significant bleeding, nerve injury, ureter injury, incomplete achievement of the goal of installing the device which includes two titanium plates with nails to hold it into the vertebrae and the polyethylene or plastic insert that is the NEW discchariteIII_1s
  • A certain number of people have subsidence of the device into the vertebrae and hence no disc-like functioning can be achieved at all
  • Slippage of the device precluding its working
  • The device has little movement and is really a fusion-type procedure
  • Infection if it occurs is a big problem to cure
  • Pain relief is only achieved in 50% of patients and is about as effective as an instrumented spinal fusion at 6 months after surgery.
  • Rehab is essential to get a decent result
  • The polyethylene insert WILL wear out, like a total hip will wear out and making it last depends on NO activity or the insert will wear out fast and can shatter and can require replacement in as little as a few years. Big operation again.
  • Think about the above and ask questions.
  • In time, disc replacement will be available that is effective for long-term
